If Something Goes Wrong On-Trip

Most Getaways go off without a hitch. But occasionally things happen — someone gets sick, a bag gets delayed, a passport goes missing. Here’s the playbook so you know exactly who to call for what, before you actually need it.

In a true emergency

In Portugal, dial 112 for police, fire, or medical emergencies. That’s the Portuguese equivalent of 911 and operators speak English. In Mexico, dial 911 (same number you’d use back home).

For anything life-threatening or where time matters, dial first and ask questions later.

If you need a doctor or a pharmacy (not an emergency)

Call the hotel front desk or concierge. They have relationships with English-speaking doctors and local clinics, and they can arrange a visit or point you to the nearest pharmacy. The front desk handles this kind of request constantly — it’s exactly what they’re there for.

Pharmacies in Portugal are easy to spot — look for a green cross sign. The pharmacist is usually your fastest path to an over-the-counter fix. Many speak good English.

If the airline didn’t deliver your luggage

It happens. Here’s the order of operations:

  • File a baggage claim with the airline at the airport before you leave. Get a reference number. They’ll usually deliver the bag to the hotel within a day or two.
  • Tell the hotel front desk so they know to expect the delivery and can route it to your room.
  • Buy what you need in the meantime. Most travel insurance policies include a baggage-delay benefit that reimburses you for essentials. Save your receipts.
  • For toiletries, basics, and a change of clothes, the Mini Market Premier (an 8-minute walk from the resort) covers most necessities. The hotel concierge can point you to nearby shops for clothing.

If you lose your passport

This is rare but important.

  • Tell the hotel front desk first — they can help you file a local police report (often required) and arrange transport to the nearest U.S. consulate.
  • Contact the U.S. Embassy. For Portugal, the U.S. Embassy is in Lisbon (about a 3-hour drive from Albufeira). For emergency replacement passports they can usually issue a limited-validity replacement within 24–48 hours.
  • Keep a copy of your passport on your phone — before you fly, take a photo of the photo page and email it to yourself. Makes the replacement process much faster.
